Some websites have funny/seemingly random names. In fact these random names often have meaning that goes along with the sites purpose. Here is a list of some site names that have obscure meanings oh and a few that are obvious.

Google.com sounds exactly like googol which is the number one followed by 100 zeros. It is the biggest number that gets a name not counting a googolplex which is a 1 followed by a googol zeros.

fandango.com is the movie ticket website that advertises with puppets made out of brown paper lunch bags. It is also the word for a lively Spanish-American dance performed in triple time by a man and woman playing castanets

yahoo.com Takes its name from a word invented by Jonathon Swift in Gulliver’s Travels. The Yahoos were a race of coarse and vulgar. It has been expanded over the past two centuries to mean any utterly gross person: a slob with no common courtesy is a yahoo.

facebook.com takes its name from publications distributed in schools or businesses, which helps members identify each other. In my high school the one of our favorite activities was going through the facebook and rating people.

twitter.com comes from the word twitter which means to emit a succession of small, tremulous sounds, like a bird or to engage in idle chatter about trivial stuff

bing.com it turns out the word bing in British English means a heap or pile of thing

What makes a BMW a BMW. Design, history and innovation to start. Here are some [...]

What makes a BMW a BMW. Design, history and innovation to start. Here are some ideas and features that really distinguish this Ultimate Driving Machine from ordinary cars.

The BMW Roundel

one of the most recognizable logos in the world, the blue and white insignia is also known as a roundel. It is the only automotive emblem to depict motion as it portrays the movement of an airplane propeller against a clear blue Bavarian sky. This hearkens back to BMW’s early days as a manufacturer of airplane engines that set many altitude records in the early 1900’s.

Leipzig Plant
Beautiful and factory are words that don’t usually go together. Not unless you are talking about the BMW Leipzig production facility which has been called one of the 10 most important buildings of the 21st century. Designed by Pritzker prize winning architect Zaha Hadid, the assembly line literally soars through the structure, with vehicles passing through office space and factory floors alike. Cars are built as art, and traditional notions of manufacturing are deconstructed.

Inline Six-cylinder Engine
The inline 6-cylinder engine is a BMW hallmark. Though it is not as compact as a V-6 configuration – and therefore costs more to build a car around – the inline-6 is prized for its exceptional smoothness. The inline-6 is more balances than any other engine, it is so balanced in fact it does not require a balance shaft.

Kidney Grille
One of the most visible BMW design elements us the twin-kidney grille. Introduced in 1933, the distinctive shape of the kidneys first emerged from an effort to reduce aerodynamic drag. Over time, they have evolved from tall ovals into their now emblematic low, wide shape. They symbolize the timelessness of the BMW design and engineering.

The Hofmeister Kink
The subtle reverse turn of the C-pillar, another understated feature that is uniquely BMW, is known as the Hofmeister kink. Named after BMW’s design director at the time, Wilhelm Hofmeister, this styling cue made its debut on the 1500 model in 1961. You can find it on virtually every BMW Sedan, COupe and SAV since.

Here is a list from Fast Company of the top 10 most addictive sounds in the world. For good measure we’ve got branded and non-branded.

The Intel one is probably my number one, it is almost subliminal for me, I hear it and think “Intel Inside”.

Non-branded and branded sounds:
1. Baby giggle

Top 5 Blu-Ray DVDs to Buy

Here is a current list of top Blu-Ray DVDs to Buy.

1. Transformers:
Nothing speaks more Hi-Def then Michael Bay’s robot warriors going at it. Not only does the CGI and visuals come out crisp and clean, the Blu-Ray comes with a 2nd DVD that is packed with great behind the scenes footage and segments.

Transformers (Two-Disc Special Edition + BD Live) [Blu-ray]

2. Beowulf:
Angela Jolie. Naked. In CGI. That enough has made the Robert Zemeckis’ CGI re-telling of the myth a big seller on the Blu-Ray listings. But looking besides that point, the movie, like most CGI films, look great on Blu-Ray and Robert Zemeckis happens to be an actually great storyteller (um, Forest Gump anyone? The movie that got him the Oscar for best director?). So buy this great movie, pop it in, and be dazzled by the details Blu-Ray captures. Or, and yes, it comes in an ‘unrated’ version only….whatever that means.

Beowulf [Blu-ray]

3. Black Hawk Down:
Ridley Scott’s adaption of the book based on the failed mission in Somali, to capture the Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. This also depicts the Battle of Mogadishu, the raid integral to the United States’ effort to capture Aidid. Starring an all-star cast including Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor and Tom Sizemore, the movie is a symphony for the eyes and ears, as you feel so much part of the action. This Blu-Ray really brings in the visceral environment Ridley wanted for his audience.

Black Hawk Down [Blu-ray]

4. Sin City:
A great fun, action packed movie for all you Frank Miller fans, but its also a great flix to see on Blu-Ray due to the wonderful real actors/CGI/green-screen effects that director Robert Rodriguez put together, with a little help from his friends Frank and Quentin.

Sin City (Two-Disc Theatrical & Recut, Extended, and Unrated Versions) [Blu-ray]

5. Collateral:
Ok, maybe you’re not a Tom Cruise fan, but this instant classic is a great piece of filming from Michael Mann, who directed everything with HD cameras. This allows the picture on the Blu-Ray to be outstanding – crisp, clear and details even in the darkness. Yes, Mann did the same with Miami Vice and Public Enemy, but we liked the storyline in this movie better – sans Tom Cruise of course.

Collateral [Blu-ray]
